SUPPORTING MEDICALLY ASSISTED DYING IN AOTEAROA

WHAT WE DO

We are an advocacy organisation pursuing change in the law that will enhance choice at the end of life. We were successful in our campaign for legislation that enables competent adults experiencing irremediable suffering from a terminal or irreversible illness, to receive medical assistance to end their life at a time of their choosing.

From 2017 to 2020 we successfully pursued a change in the law that will enhance choice at the end of life. New Zealand now has legislation that enables competent adults experiencing irremediable suffering from a terminal illness to receive medical assistance to end their lives at a time of their choosing.

Having achieved this we now:

  1. Work with the Ministry of Health via their Assisted Dying Service. This Service supports patients, trained assisted dying doctors and specialists to deliver assisted dying to eligible applicants.
  2. Provide information to terminally ill people who are uncertain about accessing the application system.
  3. Ensure that we will be able to respond constructively when the 3- and 5-year reviews of the Act are underway.
  4. Support other jurisdictions that are currently attempting to get Medically Assisted Dying legislation passed.

We are a member of the World Federation of Right to Die Societies.

The World Federation of Right to Die Societies wishes to see a world in which all people

  • have the right to die with dignity, peacefully and without suffering;
  • are able to make their own choices about death while taking into account the reasonable interests of others; and
  • are able to make their well-considered end of life decisions in a safe and peaceful environment supported by the law.
